Standard round lengths
Professional boxing uses 3-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest. Amateur bouts are usually 3 rounds of 3 minutes. MMA rounds are 5 minutes with 1 minute of rest, and Muay Thai traditionally uses 5 rounds of 3 minutes with 2 minutes of rest. Training at your sport's round length builds the right pacing.
A 6-round heavy bag workout
Round 1: jab and cross to warm up. Round 2: hooks. Round 3: uppercuts. Round 4: three- and four-punch combinations. Round 5: slip, roll and move between combinations. Round 6: all-out punches for the whole round. Rest fully in each 1-minute break.
Shadowboxing, skipping and pad work
The same round timer works for shadowboxing, skipping rope and partner pad work. Shorter 2-minute rounds with 1 minute of rest are a good start for beginners and for conditioning finishers.
Hear every round
The timer calls out "work" at the start of each round, "rest" when it ends and "complete" after the final round, and the screen stays on with the countdown and round number. Turn the volume up or connect a speaker for a noisy gym.
